Three Key points of Power hitters- Hovland and DJ.

ThIs particular blog is about giving a broad description of the power positions or movement by some of the big hitters in the modern game. These include Victor Hovland, Dustin Johnston and John Rahm. This golf swing does require good mobility and flexibility. However, I have introduced some of these positions with my own students and nearly all mid to high handicappers could benefit from this style of golf swing.

Optional - Within this family of golfers they tend to have a a strong left hand position. This means that you will see three knuckles if you look downwards towards your grip or if you have a glove you would see a lot of the manufacturers logo. Initially try the Key Points listed below first then experiment with a stronger grip.

Benefit - Stronger left hand will reduce scooping.

Key Point - With in the takeaway (first move in the backswing) the club face stays facing the golf ball longer with the combination of a wide takeaway. Width is important in a golf swing whereby the clubface is moved around in a shut position.

Benefit - Wider backswing helps link the left shoulder which initiates a good turn.

Key Point - Keeping the club face facing the golf ball for longer produces a position at the top called “bowed” or “flexed” wrists, The glove logo is facing the sky at the top of the backswing. This does help golfer compress the golf ball and crucially for those that hit the ball right of target ( right handed golfer) it helps square the club face up earlier in the downswing which is a trait of successful golfers.

Benefit - Squaring the club face up earlier in the downswing hits the golf ball straighter and this produces a straighter miss hit.

Key Point - Having created the right backswing position the final Key Point must happen.

To stop the ball going left of target or hitting a well struck right shot. The down swing must be very rotational. Facing the target earlier is crucial in the downswing. Rotation and rotation. The earlier the chest plate faces the target the powerful this will be. This should create a feeling the club goes left of target.

Benefit - Faster body rotation means increased club head speed.
